About this piece

Full description

  • 24-pane grid
  • Blank for DIY painting
  • Facade and interior wall builds

Twenty-four panes in a rectangular grid. This blank window frame is a Scene Parts piece for 1:12 dollhouse builds, made to sit in a wall opening on a facade or on an interior wall, where a window is often the thing that makes a small room look convincing rather than boxed in. The grid is the whole character of the piece: at miniature scale a large sheet of glazing reads as an empty hole, while twenty-four small panes give the window a rhythm and a period feel, and they hold shadow and light the way a real sash window does.

Set one in a bedroom wall, a shop front or a landing, and the room behind it starts to look as though it has an outside. The frame is left blank, which leaves the finish to you. Paint it white for a plain modern house, use a dark or grey tone for a period facade, or add a second colour inside the panes to suggest a different sash from the frame.

Bare wood also takes a light sanding before painting if you want a smoother face, and if you are building a workshop or a house under construction the unfinished look can be left as it is. This is one of the larger single pieces on the site at $39.99, and the compare-at price is $50.99. Two windows come to $67.99 rather than $79.98, which is the cheaper way to fit a facade with matching windows, or to put one in a front wall and one in a back wall of the same build.

Five photographs come with this piece, all of the same window at $39.99, and each is labelled as a main product photo. Nothing here varies by colour or size, so the frame you see is the frame you get. The scale is 1:12, the same as the other miniatures sold here, so proportions hold together when the window stands alongside those pieces, and a facade built from them reads as one building.

The double wooden door is the obvious partner at an entrance, Mini Plants work well on a sill or just inside, and Display & Storage pieces give you somewhere to keep spare props between builds. Handle the frame flat rather than by one corner, since thin mullions are the easiest part of a miniature to bend. Support the piece from underneath when you press it into a wall opening, and dust the panes and ledges with a soft dry brush rather than a cloth.
