About this piece
Full description
- Left and right handrail pieces
- Blank finish for custom colour
- Staircase and landing builds
The unfinished staircase problem: you have built the treads, the flight is square and level, and it still looks like a set of shelves. What is missing is a handrail. These railing parts are shaped for a stair run and for the landing above it, and the options split the right handrail and the left handrail into two entries, so you can buy the side your build calls for instead of paying for a matched pair you will never use.
Both pieces come as bare, unpainted blanks. That is the useful part. You can take the rail towards the paintwork already in your hallway, whether that is a soft off-white on the balusters, a dark stain, or a distressed finish that looks fifty years old. Paint the piece on the bench, before it is fixed in place, because every face is reachable then and almost none of them are afterwards. Try your colour on an inconspicuous edge first and let it cure before you handle the rail again.
Both rails are held to the 1:12 dollhouse scale used across this range, so the run sits at the pitch the scale calls for. At that scale a figure at the top of the steps looks as though it is resting a hand on the rail rather than leaning on a fence. Fit the handrail after the staircase is stable, and dry-fit the run before committing to adhesive, since a rail that is a fraction out will show at the newel post.
Right handrail 1 is priced at $24.99. The left handrail is the same. Running alongside those is a two-for-$41.99 offer, which is the sensible way to buy when the staircase needs a rail on both sides.
Two photographs come with this piece, captioned so it is clear which hand of railing each one shows.
Blank, unfinished miniatures show handling marks sooner than finished ones, so keep your fingers clean and dry while you test the fit, and grip the rail where it is thickest rather than at a turned detail. Freshly painted surfaces should be left alone for as long as the instructions suggest before they go into a scene. When the piece is on display, a soft brush is enough to lift dust. Keep the rail out of strong direct sun, and store unused parts flat and wrapped rather than standing loose in a box. A completed railing turns a flight of steps into the part of the build people notice, and it works with the other Scene Parts on this site in a hall or a two-storey interior.
